IMPACT

What is IMPACT?

IMPACT is a research based, empirically driven model based on rigorous analysis of what makes individuals and organizations successful.

The IMPACT competency framework is based on the expertise and insight from outstanding organizations and thought leaders across many disciplines.

Leadership is not dependent on title.

Leadership is a set of learned competencies, when mastered, creates significant synergy between team members and their leader creating powerful outcomes and significant results.

At all levels everyone is a leader and anyone can become a better leader.

The baseline concept for leadership is a people focus.  People are led and processes are managed.  Outstanding leaders are people focused.  This is a non-negotiable reality.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”
John F. Kennedy

IMPACT Competencies

Self-Awareness and Self-Management

Turning the view inward is very important for successful leaders. Leaders need to have a clear understanding of who they are, seek feedback about it from a variety of sources and then understand the impact of their personality and style on others. Great leaders also will be very good at managing their emotional composition, remaining confident and being resilient in the face of obstacles.

Effective Communication

The most basic skill of leadership is communication. Leaders must be effective communicators in order to execute any of the other competencies. Listening, clarity, tone, non-verbal signals and style matching are the most important skills within this competency.

Effective Communication

Engagement and Morale

Using relationships and tone setting strategies, leaders must win the hearts of their team. Before any other approach can be used, a leader must connect with team members and create an environment in which they want to be productive and effective.

Coaching-Providing Feedback

Telling people when they are doing well and when they are not doing well is a fundamental role of a leader. Doing it well and in the right proportions is an art. Effective leaders will provide a great deal of positive feedback and not shy away from corrective feedback when needed.

Relationships and Power

All leaders need power and effective leaders manage their power sources and types actively. Never leaning on threat power or overusing reward power, the best leaders work to build relationships and networks to get things done. Effective leaders also never over-rely on their own expertise power and openly subordinate their technical expertise to team members.

EQ Relationships and Power

Empowerment and Team Development

More than just delegation, leaders need to empower their team to act, make decisions, solve problems and learn and grow. Great leaders create power and not just direct it and leaders are concerned with their legacy related to the people left when they leave.

Empowerment and Team Development

Decision Making and Ethics

Moving decisions to the right level and then using the appropriate level of analysis is the hallmark of a great leader. Neither rash or paralyzed by gathering information, a leader must carve out a middle ground of the best information at the best time. Another great non-negotiable of leadership is the ethical composition of a leader. A leader must be trustworthy and model the highest levels of ethical behavior on a consistent and constant basis.

Decision Making and Ethics

Risk, Courage and Thinking

Leaders must have the courage to act and do the right thing but also the good judgement on when acting and using courage is not always feasible. Using critical thinking, strategic thinking and systems thinking, outstanding leaders will risk when needed and pull back when appropriate. Never bold for the sake of being bold, but bold when bold has value.

Innovation and Change

Effective leaders must be agents of change and help guide others through the change cycle. In addition, leaders must also innovate both their organization’s processes and their own approach to leading others.

Innovation and Change

Planning and Vision
